Masters of Postmodernism DVD Series
OPPORTUNITY
Design DVD covers for Plexifilm’s Masters of Postmodernism Film Series including Stefan Sagmeister, Art Chantry, David Carson and Peter Saville.
SOLUTION
Even though Sagmeister, Chantry, Carson and Saville can be classified as Postmodern designers, each of them have their own eclectic style. It was important for the series to be unified yet representative of the specific designers. Trying to replicate or reference the designers’ work specifically would create significant disharmony, so a simple color palette was chosen. The cover designs include a portrait of the designer, a block of color and the designer’s name. Each one was handled in a way that would parallel the individual designer’s solution.
Red was chosen to represent Sagmeister’s boldness in his work. Chantry is represented by green as a reference to his eco-friendly, analog approach. Yellow is associated with Saville through a specific poster design for Factory Records. Blue was chosen to accompany Carson as a reference to work he did for surf magazines.
For the interior of the cases, a quote from the designer was included to further communicate his thought process.
